RARE RAGA SERIES: SUDDHA DESI – JANYA OF MELA (20) RAGAM NATABHAIRAVI

Suddha Desi is almost ragam NaTabhairavi itself, only difference is the additional R2 appearing in vakra in the arohanam; like the janaka ragam, the number of compositions are less, most of these are not even heard. The raga is a very pleasing one and similar to many other ragas; also is listening pleasure – still, except two of the Trinities, Saint Thyagaraja and Muthuswami Dikshithar, nobody else has seen to compose in this raga. The ragaswaroopa is :

S R2 G2 R2 M1 P D1 N2 S // S N2 D1 P M1 G2 R2 S

Though Sangeetha Sampradaya Pradarshini by Subbarama Dikshithar gives the details of ragas used by Sri. Dikshithar, there is no reference about Suddha Desi.

Ragapravaham by D.Pattammal gives different specifications under mela (20) ragam NaTabhairavi and (22) ragam Kharaharapriya.

Under NaTabhairavi :

S R M P D N S - S N D P M G R S

S R G M P D N S - S N D P M G R S

S R G R M P D N S - S N D P M G R S (same as the conventional)

S R M P D N D S - S N D P D M G R S

Under Kharaharapriya :

S R M P D N D S - S N D P D M G R S

compositions:

Kamakshi mam pahi - Dikshithar

endu kowgalinturA - Thyagaraja

raghunandana rAjamOhana – Thyagaraja

In the krithi ‘raghu nandana rAja’, SrI Thyagaraja pleads with Lord to sport in his mind.

Meaning:

“O Lord SrI raghu nandana! O King of charm! O Lord praised by this tyAgarAja! Deign to sport in my mind.

Even though You abide in the Lotus of the hearts of pArvati, AnjanEya, sage nArada and others, deign to sport in my mind too.

Considering that those true devotees, who lovingly contemplate on You by seating You in their minds, to be the most eminent ones, I too worshipped by seating You in my mind; You are the source for relieving my anxiety; I cannot endure any further”.

Here is a rendition of this rare krithi, by Sri. S.P.Viswalingam.
