Ragam Jujahuli or Jujavali is one of the rarest ragas; mostly never being heard in concerts; indebted for its existence to the Thyagaraja krithi, “Paraaku jesina”, but for which, this raga would have been already out from the carnatic music. Even the Thyagaraja krithi is not being heard in the recent times. Jujahuli is a vakra-shadava shadava janya of Harikambhoji mela ragam, also losing R2 in both directions; so that the swaras can be seen as:
S M1 G3 M1 P D2 N2 S // S N2 D2 P M1 G3 S
The suddha madhyamam appears again vakra in the arohanam and the sudden leap from lower shadjam to this madhyamam makes the raga not so attractive and flows almost in the same line of the raga Sarvashri created by Dr.M.Balamuraleekrishna.
There is no reference found in SSP by Subbarama Dikshithar; but Ragapravaham by D.Pattammal gives different specifications under mela(13) Gayakapriya and mela (28) Harikambhoji.
Under mela(13)Gayakapriya,
S M G M P D N S //S D N D P M G S
S R M P N D N S //S N D P M G S
S R M P N D N S //S N D P M G R S
S G M P D N S // S D N D P M G S
and under (28) Harikambhoji,
S M G M P D N S // S N D P M G S
The differences in the above being D1 and N1 in the former, replaced by D2 and N2 in the latter.
Compositions:
Paraaku jesina - Thyagaraja
Anandame paramanandame – Sudhananda Bharathi
As the only composition available for discussion, we take the Thyagaraja krithi; here, the composer pleads with the Lord not to ignore him, by saying:
“O Supreme Lord whose is beyond Everything!
O Benefactor of celestials and brAhmaNas! O Consort of lakshmI! O Ever-youthful (or tireless) bodied!
O Original Cause (OR) O Embodiment of prudence! O Generous Lord! O Lord praised by this tyAgarAja!
What benefit did accrue to You by showing unconcern towards me?
Did I not joyfully pay obeisance holding Your Feet Lotus? I have no refuge or shelter.
What benefit did accrue to You by showing unconcern towards me?”
